I wonder if anyone noticed how bright the sun has been shining the past three days in Gurgaon (or the rest of NCR for that matter). There has been no fog/smog in the mornings. There has been no news of flight being delayed due to fog in the past 3 days. I haven’t read about fog-related accidents in the past 3 days. The sky has been a beautiful blue all this while and there has bright sunshine.
So, what do you think caused it?
There’s one more event that has been going on during the past three days. An All India truck strike. More than 5 million trucks are off the road all across India. Didn’t you notice all those big Maruti trucks lined up along the Old Jaipur highway? They are causing a jam even without moving because they are simply taking up road space.
But, with all these trucks being off the road, they are not burning diesel and pumping pollutants into the air. A friend of mine thinks that this is the single reason for why we have been enjoying clear blue skies and bright blue sunshine during the past 3 days.
And I agree. Removing more than almost 500,000,000 million liters a day worth of diesel pollution from the environment has to count for something. And I am guessing it counts for a lot.
So, while we cannot live without the trucking system, there’s got to be something that can be done to reduce the pollution that is being guzzled into the air. Upgraded vehicles, cleaner fuel, stricter regulations on engine maintenance, and trucker education come to mind right away.
